Shipments, Pricing Starting to Improve

Walter Energy said in a preliminary statement that its business improved in the first quarter as metallurgical coal sales start to increase. Volumes are expected to improve 9 percent and prices are beginning to tick higher. That has WLT up almost 7 percent before the bell on my tradeMONSTER platform.

Ashland Gains on Jana Investment

Hedge fund Jana Partners disclosed it has built a 7.4 percent stake in chemicals producer Ashland. It's now the second biggest shareholder, and is in talks with management to improve the stock price. ASH climbs 6 percent on the news.

Harris Drops on Sequestration Effects

Harris third-quarter earnings were about $1.12 a share on revenue of $1.2 billion. Analysts had expected $1.26 and $1.32 billion, respectively. The defense contractor blamed sequestration, saying "the uncertainty is unprecedented." HRS dropped 7 percent in extended trading.

As I stated in last week's article, a break out or a break down needs to have a couple things happen before it is considered a confirmed break out or break down. The only problem is that in today's market where things move much more quicker than they did just a few years ago, two days could wind up being the majority of the expected movement, if not the whole movement.
