Corporate earnings will likely be the main events on today's calendar.
Agribusiness giant Monsanto will report quarterly results before the opening bell, while aluminum producer Alcoa follows in the afternoon. Earnings season is now getting underway, so other companies are likely to issue preliminary releases.
The Consumer Electronics Conference is also being held in Las Vegas and JP Morgan's health-care conference is taking place in San Francisco, so companies in those industries could be active.
The only economic releases will be German manufacturers orders early in the morning and NFIB's small-business survey at 7:30 a.m. ET. Neither is likely to have a significant impact on sentiment.
