Earnings, Sales, Guidance Strong

Ascena Retail earned $0.34 a share in the fourth quarter, crushing analysts' estimates for profit of $0.21. Sales of $1.20 billion also beat the $1.17 billion consensus number, and guidance was strong. ASNA surges 14 percent before the opening bell on my tradeMONSTER platform.

Copart Falls on Weak Results

Copart reported quarterly profit of just $0.33 a share, missing the $0.40 average analyst estimate. The company also announced that it has abandoned efforts to become a real-estate investment trust. CPRT drops 10 percent in the premarket.

A Lifeline for Oncothyreon

Oncothyreon cratered in December on weak trial data for its L-BLP25 cancer compound, but is getting a major shot in the arm today after Germany's Merck KGaA decided to continue clinical development. ONTY rockets 25 percent on the news!

The art of trading

As I stated in last week's article, a break out or a break down needs to have a couple things happen before it is considered a confirmed break out or break down. The only problem is that in today's market where things move much more quicker than they did just a few years ago, two days could wind up being the majority of the expected movement, if not the whole movement.
