Nearing the halfway mark in today's session, here are the individual equity names with the most call and put buying on optionMONSTER's ActionTracker data system.

Vale (VALE): More than 23,000 January 18 calls were purchased, mostly for $0.85 to $0.92 as investors look for upside in the mining company. VALE fell 1.11 percent to $17.78.

Suncor Energy (SU): Blocks of 6,000 contracts each traded in the November 33 calls and the November 34 calls as investors look for the Canadian oil company it push higher this week. SU fell 1.02 percent to $33.03.

MetroPCS Communications (PCS): Some 29,454 February 10 puts were bought for $1.05. Equal-sized blocks were sold in the February 9 puts for $0.55 and the November 10 puts for $0.15 as an investor closed a downside position this month and opened a new bearish spread in February. PCS rose 2.04 percent to $10.26.

J.C. Penney (JCP): Some 7,700 November 17 puts were bought for $0.21 to $0.36 but volume was far below open interest at the strike. JCP fell 0.72 percent to $17.84.

The art of trading

As I stated in last week's article, a break out or a break down needs to have a couple things happen before it is considered a confirmed break out or break down. The only problem is that in today's market where things move much more quicker than they did just a few years ago, two days could wind up being the majority of the expected movement, if not the whole movement.
