SPY: SEE CHART GET CHAIN FIND STRATEGIES
Total option volume tops 5.5 million contracts as the typical names dominate activity in the indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 715,000 contracts traded, with 464,000 puts. Next up are the S&P 500 Index (SPX) options at 368,000, of which 217,000 are puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) takes the third spot with 288,000, dominated by 208,000 calls.
 
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) has 164,000 contracts changing hands, with a surprisingly bullish 103,000 calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 108,000 options moving, with a put/call ratio of 2 to 1.

The SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Fund (DIA) makes the top-volume list today with 66,000 options, evenly split between calls and puts. The SPDR Gold Share Fund (GLD) has 63,000 contracts traded, with 38,000 calls.
