Total option volume is again relatively light with fewer than 5 million contracts, and puts are again leading the way in the indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER's data systems.
The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (SPY) has 800,000 contracts traded, led by 507,000 puts. The S&P 500 Index (SPX) options are next up with 209,000 and a 2-to-1 put/call ratio. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), which is derived from those SPX options, has 193,000 contracts, 113,000 of which are calls.
The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) sees 151,000 options turning over, including 96,000 puts. Just behind are the iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) options at 147,000, with slightly less puts than calls.
The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN (VXX) has 126,000 contracts changing hands, with 77,000 puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has seen more than 106,000 contracts move, with 63,000 calls. The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 90,000 options traded, with slightly more puts than calls.
