SPY: SEE CHART GET CHAIN FIND STRATEGIES
Total option volume is very heavy with 7.2 million contracts trading while puts top the index and ETF activity, optionMONSTER's data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 (SPY) already sees 1.3 million options trade, 940,000 of which are puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) is next up with 318,000 contracts and a put/call ratio of better than 2 to 1.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has 257,000 contracts changing hands as puts outpace calls by 4 to 1. Not far behind are the S&P 500 Index (SPX) options at 240,000, including 178,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX) has 189,000 options traded, with just slightly more calls than puts. The SPDR Gold Shares Fund (GLD) has 158,000 contracts moving, also with slightly more calls. Just behind are the iShares Emerging Markets Fund (EEM) options at 146,000, including 118,000 puts.

The iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Fund (VXX) has 94,000 options changing hands, 56,000 of which are calls. Following are the iShares EAFE Index Fund (EFA) options with 92,000 and a put/call ratio of better than 3 to 1.
